8-time Wimbledon Champion Roger Federer will face Richard Gasquet in the second round of Wimbledon 2021 after a 4-set win against Frenchman Adrian Mannarino.
Federer has barely played this year and looked rusty in the opening encounter against Mannarino losing the second and third set in quick time, but fought back to the win. Federer prevailed winning 6-4, 6-7(3), 3-6, 6-2. Mannarino retired after having a bad fall during the fifth set.

“It’s awful. It shows that one shot can change the outcome of a match, a season, a career. I wish him all the best and I hope he recovers quickly so we see him back on the courts. He could have won the match in the end. Obviously, he was the better player, so I definitely got a bit lucky.
You don’t get many walkovers throughout a career and you try also not to have it happen to yourself. It’s a reminder of how quickly it goes. But of course, I’m obviously happy I can get another chance for another match here. I worked very hard and in the end, I enjoyed myself out there today. It was great fun until the end, obviously.
Two time Wimbledon semi-finalist Gasquet, who was once ranked number seven in the world, has dropped to 51. He won his previous outing after a minor hiccup defeating Japan’s Yuichi Sugita 7-6, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.
The Swiss who is gunning to end his career with a 21st Grand Slam. He comes into the tournament with a disappointing performance in Halle. The Roland Garros was his first Grand Slam back after undergoing double knee surgery. He reached the fourth round at the French Open and decided to withdraw to prepare himself better for Wimbledon this year.

Federer will try and have the upper hand in rallies and keep the points to a minimum. He is also lacking match fitness and lacks the consistency needed to win more matches at the Grand Slam level. Gasquet will be looking to exploit the 20-time champion’s forehand after a drastic increase in his errors.
