Swiss ace Roger Federer confirmed he will be out of the 2020 French after undergoing surgery on an injury

Roger Federer confirmed he underwent knee surgery to deal with an injury that was troubling him.

The Swiss ace posted on social media that he underwent arthroscopic surgery in Switzerland on Wednesday and will be out of action for a while.

The bad news for the 38-year-old is that he will miss some big tournaments such as the Dubai Tennis Championships, the Miami Open and Indian Wells.

However, the big tournament that Federer is set to miss is the 2020 French Open. Federer claimed that the decision to undergo surgery was the right move, something that the doctors also suggested.

The Swiss ace added that he would be back soon and hinted that he would be back on the “grass” courts, which could see him at Wimbledon.

Federer looked in good shape in the Australian Open too but was knocked out of the competition by eventual winner Novak Djokovic.

Federer has been stuck on 20 Grand Slams for a while, with Rafael Nadal on 19 and Djokovic now on 17.

The Swiss had also decided to curtail his clay court season in 2020. His agent had confirmed that the 38-year-old was only going to play in the French Open and nothing else.

Federer and his injury woes

The 38-year-old has been in the tennis business for a while and it should come as no surprise that he has had to deal with several injuries.

His back has been injured several times and underwent knee surgery in 2016 to repair a torn meniscus.

He went missing for most of the 2016 season and slipped down to No.17 in the world rankings too.

The lack of games and his decision to take time off seemed to have worked in 2017 and 2018. He won three Grand Slams, but he didn’t feature at Roland Garros from 2016-2018.

He reached the semi-final of the French Open last year and was the finalist in Wimbledon, but was unable to land a Grand Slam.

Federer also injured his knee last year, and it seems that his injury woes will continue for a while. Even in the Australian Open, he injured his groin before his clash against Djokovic.

That could have played a role in his semi-final exit and hopefully, he comes back stronger than ever for Wimbledon.
