Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar have had quite the rivalry over the years.
WrestleMania 38’s main event features Roman Reigns taking on Brock Lesnar. It’s being labeled by many fans as the ‘biggest WrestleMania match of all time” as two superhumans will take each other on at The Show of Shows.
The stakes are already very high when two of the fiercest athletes in sports entertainment battle it out. Adding to the excitement is the fact that this match would be a champion versus champion match. Brock Lesnar is the current WWE Champion while Roman Reigns is the Universal Champion. So it’s a winner-takes-it-all match. Whichever superstar manages to get the W will become the new undisputed champion.
This match will take place on night two (April 3) of WrestleMania.
Roman successfully defended his title last against Goldberg at the Elimination Chamber Pay-Per-View while Lesnar won his title on the same night inside the Elimination Chamber. Roman has been the Universal Champion for close to 600 days now.
Here we take a look at all the stats and details from previous encounters between these two legendary superstars:
Lesnar and Reigns have faced each other on seven occasions, with four one-on-one matches and the remaining three being matches involving other superstars.
Interestingly, the head-to-head score is tied at 3-3. Seth Rollins won the match at WrestleMania 31 by cashing in his Money in the Bank contract.
Brock Lesnar (c) versus Roman Reigns – WrestleMania 31
This was the first match in a series of matches that would follow between Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns. Roman would win the 2015 Royal Rumble and earn a championship shot at WrestleMania. He would challenge Lesnar for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.
Roman was being backed by WWE as the face of the company but fans weren’t getting behind The Big Dog. Reigns survived two F-5s and numerous suplexes until Seth Rollins appeared with his Money in the Bank briefcase. Rollins would cash in as Lesnar and Reigns were down in the ring exhausted. Rollins Curb Stomped Lesnar once but wanted to be double sure. He went for another Curb Stomp but was caught by Lesnar. Just when Lesnar was about to deliver F-5 on Rollins, Roman would take out Brock with a spear.
Rollins would take advantage as he Curb Stomped Reigns to pick up the victory.
Roman Reigns versus Brock Lesnar versus Dean Ambrose – Fastlane 2016
Roman Reigns had a feud building with Triple H as The Game forced The Big Dog to defend his World Heavyweight Championship in the Royal Rumble match in 2016.
The current Universal Champion eventually lost the match as he was eliminated by The Game himself. Triple H ended up winning the match as he threw Dean Ambrose over the ropes.
Roman would have to win the match at Fastlane to set up a clash with Triple H at WrestleMania. Hence this match was to determine the number one contender for the World Heavyweight championship. Ambrose and Reigns teamed up on Lesnar to take the beast out of the contest. They put him through a table twice. The match would continue as Roman and Dean ended their mini-alliance and started a slugfest.
Lesnar returned after a long time full of rage and was on the verge of winning until Ambrose hit him with a chair. Lesnar was knocked out and Roman would pin Ambrose for the victory.
Brock Lesnar (c) versus Roman Reigns versus Samoa Joe versus Braun Strowman – Fatal 4-Way Match for WWE Universal Championship, SummerSlam 2017
This match was brutal and power-packed. All four superstars are known for their physical dominance.
The match started with Brock and Roman taking out Samoa Joe and Braun Strowman respectively. Lesnar and Roman would then come face to face. Lesnar delivered a suplex on Reigns and then Joe.
Strowman and Brock would come face to face this time. ‘The Monster Among Men’ would clothesline Lesnar out of the ring. At ringside, Joe would lock Lensar in Coquina Clutch and relent seeing Reigns charging in for the spear. Lesnar took the spear as both men went crashing through the barricade. Joe would pick Roman up and slam him on the announcer’s table.
All of them gave their best. There was plenty of exhilarating and intense action on display. All the four wrestlers had their moments and looked to be on course to win the title until Lesnar pinned Reigns to end the grueling contest. As a result, Lesnar would retain his title.
Brock Lesnar (c) versus Roman Reigns – WrestleMania 34
This might be the most physical contest these two men have been involved in against each other. Roman Reigns dominated the initial stages of the match but Lesnar weathered the storm and after that, it was all Lesnar. He would slow down the pace of the match and delivered 5 F-5s on Reigns. One of them was through an announce table.
The Big Dog still wouldn’t give up. This frustrated the beast as he opened his gloves and executed a lethal attack on Reigns with punches using his bare hands. This would bust Reigns open.
Roman would still continue fighting valiantly as he recovered to deliver two spears but Lesnar kicked out at two and a half. Lesnar finally delivered another F-5 to finish a brutal match.
Brock Lesnar (c) versus Roman Reigns – Steel Cage Match at WWE Greatest Royal Rumble 2018
This match was contested for Lesnar’s Universal title and it had a shock ending. It started once again at a rapid pace. Brock was in the game from the get-go. He delivered 4 German suplexes and a couple of F-5s before Reigns came back with 3 Superman punches.
Reigns tried to leave the cage to get the win but Paul Heyman shut the door on his face. The match would continue as both wrestlers coped heavy blows from each other.
In the climax, Roman hit Reigns with a spear as both men crashed out on the floor breaking the cage wall. Brock Lesnar’s back hit the floor first and he won the match and retained the title.
Brock Lesnar (c) versus Roman Reigns – SummerSlam 2018
Roman would get another bite at the cherry at SummerSlam 2018. Brock would defend his title again. Reigns had to outlast Finn Balor, Drew McIntyre, and Bobby Lashley to become the number one contender.
This match was for Lesnar’s Universal Championship. Both men entered the ring but to their shock ‘The Monster Among Mean’ – Braun Strowman appeared and said he will watch the match from ringside. Braun held the Money in the Bank briefcase at that time. Roman got off the blocks quicker as he delivered three superman punches. He followed them up with two spears and went for a third one which Lesnar incredibly countered into a Guillotine.
Lesnar would then control the pace of the match. Roman, however, managed to counter the F-5 and tried delivering another spear to Lesnar who was standing on the apron. Lesnar swayed away and the spear turned into a ‘suicide dive’ on Strowman standing just behind Lesnar on the outside. Brock would capitalize on Strowman who looked a bit dazed and delivered the F-5. He followed it up with chair shots to neutralize Braun.
He got back in the ring. Roman got enough time to recover and was waiting to strike the champion. Lesnar turned with a chair in hand only to receive a spear. Roman won the match and became the new Universal Champion.
Roman Reigns (c) versus Brock Lesnar – Crown Jewel 2021
This was the last time they faced each other. This was the first time Roman took on Lesnar as the heel in the storyline. It also marked the first time that Roman entered the match as the champion.
Both men executed their signature moves but they were all being kicked out of. Lesnar delivered a series of suplexes and F-5s while Reigns offered a few superman punches and spears of his own.
Heyman threw the title belt into the ring between the two men. A tug of war ensued. The Usos interfered and Superkicked Lesnar. Roman would then hit Lesnar with the championship belt to score the pin. This match was a bit of a disappointment especially with Heyman tossing the belt and The Usos interfering in a match that had ebbed and flowed nicely till then.
The next chapter of the saga will take place in Texas on April 3rd at WrestleMania 38. This time the stakes are higher than ever. Both men will enter as champions. One will leave with both titles while the other will be left empty-handed.
The latest encounter between Lesnar and Reigns was seen on last week’s Madison Square Garden house show. Lesnar defended his title successfully against Austin Theory. After the match, Roman and ‘The Bloodline’ attacked Lesnar and left him bloodied on the steel steps.
Things are getting heated up and it’s going to be a brawl at ‘Mania.
