At this point, McIlroy thought his shift began at 12.25 p.m. rather than 11.25 a.m. He needed a police escort to the course because he slept in, and he got there just 10 minutes before his match with Keegan Bradley.
The PGA employee who helped save him from what would have been a highly embarrassing incident was Stoll, a native of New York, and the cops took care of the remainder of the process to get him to the course.
Five years after that incident, the pair were married, and their ceremony was held on the grounds of Ashworth Castle, one of Ireland’s most upscale hotels. Star-studded guests included Chris Martin from Coldplay and Niall Horan of One Direction. Stevie Wonder and Ed Sheeran also gave performances. His caddie, Harry Diamond, served as Best Man.
