Early career
According to Ruslan Provodnikov, he engaged in street fighting as a youngster, prompting his father to enroll him in boxing lessons at the age of ten. As an amateur, he emerged victorious in 130 out of 150 fights. He was discovered by his current promoters and managers while in Ekaterinburg, and they facilitated his move to the United States. At the height of his professional career, Provodnikov was recognized for his intense and forceful fighting style, impressive ability to deliver strong punches, endurance, and exceptional ability to withstand hard hits to his chin.
Provodnikov rose to fame thanks to his performances on ESPN 2’s Friday Night Fights, where he was known for his aggressive, pressure-based fighting style. He won by decision over Demarcus Corley but fell short against Mauricio Herrera in a disputed decision.

Although inspiring Bradley with his strength and tenacity in March 2013, Ruslan Provodnikov was defeated by Timothy Bradley in a hotly contested unanimous decision. Ring Magazine and the Boxing Writers Association of America both named the bout the “2013 Fight of the Year” in recognition of its high praise.
Later that year, Provodnikov moved back down to junior welterweight and challenged Mike Alvarado for the WBO Junior welterweight championship. On October 19, 2013, Provodnikov secured a 10th-round stoppage victory over Alvarado at the FirstBank Center in Denver, Colorado. He dominated the match, knocking Alvarado down twice in the eighth round and leading on all three scorecards. Alvarado decided not to come out for the eleventh round.
On June 14, 2014, at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, Provodnikov American Chris Algieri in the first defense of his title. In the opening frame, Provodnikov landed a left hook that brought down Algieri and caused a significant swelling beneath the challenger’s right eye. After getting knocked down twice in the first round, Algieri’s boxing prowess and footwork kept Provodnikov from getting close enough to his target to make a hit. Provodnikov ultimately lost in a contentious split judgment.
Provodnikov fought Matthysse in a highly anticipated bout that lived up to its hype. Despite sustaining a deep cut above his left eye from a headbutt early in the fight, Provodnikov displayed his resilience and granite chin, taking Matthysse’s hardest shots. Though he hurt Matthysse severely in the 11th round, Provodnikov lost the Majority decision due to his failure to capitalize on the opportunity earlier.
Jesus Alvarez Rodriguez and Provodnikov squared off on November 7, 2015. Rodriguez, who had never lost, was eliminated in round four by the former champion. John Molina Jr. was the opponent for Provodnikov on June 11. In his Showtime debut, Provodnikov was defeated by unanimous decision; Molina Jr. had scores of 112-116, 113-115, and 111-117 from the three judges.
