In Hickory, North Carolina, Succop attended Hickory High School. He was selected to the all-conference team four times, twice for the all-state team, and three times for the conference’s special teams player of the year. Succop played soccer as well, making three all-state teams and tallying 104 goals over the course of his career. Rivals.com ranked him as North Carolina’s 16th-best prospect and the nation’s 4th-best kicker.
Succop attended South Carolina University. For the Gamecocks, he handled the kicking, punting, and kickoff duties.
