No.7 seed Magdalena Frech will face the challenge of Katie Volynets in the quarter-finals of the Saint-Malo Open
Poland’s Magdalena Frech is currently placed in the top 100 of the WTA rankings and is one of the favourites in this tournament. She has come to this tournament following a Round of 64 exit from the Madrid Open. Frech has been in decent form this season but will look to be more consistent on the tour.
She began her campaign in France with a comprehensive straight sets win against local favourite Chloe Paquet. In the second round, she defeated another French player, Elsa Jacquemot, once again in straight sets 6-2, 6-3. The seventh seed will look to continue her good run in the next rounds and go all the way to clinch this WTA 125 title.
Volynets has had a pretty disappointing season so far barring a one-off semi-final appearance at the ATX Open in March. She is desperate to turn things around in Madrid and has made a good start to the tournament. She began her campaign with a 7-5, 6-2 victory against France’s Margaux Rouvroy. She pulled off a major upset in the second round, defeating third seed Maryna Zanevska 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 to set up a quarter-final clash against Poland’s Magdalena Frech. It will be an uphill task for Volynets but the American has already shown that she can beat anyone on her day.
Date – Friday, 5th May
Court Type – Clay outdoor surface
Telecast – Tennis Channel
Start Time – To be announced
Location – Saint-Malo, France
Match details – Quarter-final
Frech and Volynets have never played each other before on the WTA tour. This is the first professional head to head clash between the two players. While Frech is clearly the more fancied player, it would be foolish to count Volynets out. It is a tough match to call as an intense encounter is on the cards. We are predicting an upset and Volynets could possibly beat Frech in three sets.
