Sarah Thomas was exceptional in Basketball during her time at the University of Mobile. At the age of 23, Thomas began her officiating career.

Gerry Austin, Conference USA’s coordinator of officials, was impressed by Thomas’ skills. A year later, Thomas officiated a major college football game, becoming the first woman to do so. The match was between the University of Memphis and Jacksonville State.
In 2009, she became the first woman to officiate a bowl game – Little Caesars Pizza Bowl featuring Marshall University and University of Ohio.
Two years later, on the 12th of November, she became the first woman to officiate in a Big Ten Stadium.
It was in 2013 that Thomas was in contention to become a full-time NFL referee, amongst 21 finalists.
On the 8th of April, 2015, it was history in the making, after the NFL announced that she would become the first permanent female official in the history of the NFL.
5 months later, on the 13th of September, Thomas officiated in her first game, a regular-season clash between the Hoston Texans and the Kansas City Chiefs at the NRG Stadium.
During a game between the Minnesota Vikings and the Green Bay Packers, Thomas suffered a broken left wrist due to a collision with the players. After being checked for concussion, she came back to officiate the game with a broken wrist.
She was moved to a down judge in 2017.
On the 13th of January, 2019, Thomas became the first woman to have earned an assignment for a playoff game.
In February 2021, Thomas became the first woman to officiate a Super Bowl.
