In the year 2009, Shane suffered a broken leg and ankle at the hands of Randy Orton at Legacy, due to which he had to resign from WWE and was out for quite a long time.

Shane returned to WWE after a long seven-year gap interrupting his sister Stephanie McMahon. He wanted to control Raw, which led to Shane being put in a Hell in a Cell match with The Undertaker at WrestleMania 32 with the stipulation that if he won, he would be able to control Raw, but unfortunately, he lost the game.

At the Crown Jewel event, The Miz was replaced by Shane after the latter was injured in the finals of the WWE World Cup. He defeated Dolph Ziggler in the finals in under three minutes and won the World Cup.
