Sheffield United Opinion: Why the Blades should go for Oliver McBurnie?

According to a report from Wales Online, Sheffield United and Brighton are keen to sign Swansea City star Oliver McBurnie.

The Scotland international, 22, scored 24 goals in 44 games for Swansea in 2018/19, with 22 of those coming in the Championship. However, his goals weren’t enough to guide the Swans to the play-offs, as the Welsh outfit finished 10th on the table.

But Oliver McBurnie’s performances haven’t gone unnoticed, as the report says Graham Potter, the former Swansea boss, wants to bring the striker to the Amex Stadium after being announced as the new Brighton manager.

Meanwhile, newly-promoted Sheffield United are also interested in the striker and they must do everything to beat Brighton to sign him.

Sheffield United will be looking to make the most use of the summer transfer window as Chris Wilder plots his assault on the Premier League. The Blades seemingly want to strengthen their striking department, despite the club having David McGoldrick and Billy Sharp leading their line at the moment.

However, both McGoldrick and Sharp are 31 and 33 respectively; so it would make sense if Wilder brings in a young striker to complement the ageing duo. The Blades’ boss must sign a young, prolific and exciting goalscorer that could make an impact in the Premier League next season.

In that case, Oli McBurnie fits the billing perfectly at Bramall Lane. McBurnie has been one of the standout performers for Swansea this season and has become one of the best goalscorers in the Championship. He enhanced his reputation as one of the brightest and clinical young forwards outside the Premier League by scoring 24 goals across all competitions for the Welsh outfit.

The rangy Scotsman can hold the ball up, make runs in behind defenders and is also a threat in the air. He is deadly inside the box and is adept at linking up play with his fellow attackers. Also, the former Bradford City youth works extremely hard off the ball and that attitude makes him a perfect fit for Wilder’s system.

Truly, Wilder would see McBurnie as the ideal foil to assist Sharp and McGoldrick next season. However, it won’t be a surprise if the Sheffield United manager pairs McBurnie with Sharp up front, thus dropping McGoldrick to the bench. It’ll potentially be a perfect blend of experience and youthful exuberance if that happens.

Verdict

Without any second thoughts, McBurnie would be a fantastic signing for Sheffield United. The Scotsman is ready for the Premier League and his acquisition would represent a statement of intent from the Blades.
