Sheffield United Opinion: Why the Blades should sign Liam McCarron?

According to a report from the Daily Mail, Sheffield United, Derby County, Leeds United and Wolves are watching Carlisle United winger Liam McCarron. He is valued at around £250,000.

The 18-year-old versatile attacker made his debut for Carlisle earlier this season after signing a professional contract. He managed 20 appearances in all competitions last season and while the teenager is yet to score a goal, his performances have already earned a lot of plaudits.

Sheffield United and Wolves definitely have the edge over Leeds and Derby due to their Premier League status. However, the Blades must make sure they beat their English rivals to sign the talented Liam McCarron this summer.

Chris Wilder was able to guide Sheffield United to automatic promotion from the Championship last season, just two years after helping the Blades win League One. He did a fantastic job in the Championship but the Premier League is a different kettle of fish altogether. So, the Blades boss needs to frame a proper plan of surviving the first season back in the top-flight.

A report from the Daily Mirror states that Wilder has a budget of £20 million for the summer and he is eyeing a prolific goalscorer to bolster his attacking ranks ahead of the new campaign. So, the United boss needs to smartly plot his transfer targets in a bid to strengthen his squad. Thus, signing a young player like Liam McCarron would be ideal for the Blades.

Wilder has done a good job since arriving at Bramall Lane and he’ll be hoping to nurture a talent like McCarron, who put in a series of eye-catching performances for Carlisle United in the League Two. He impressed with his blistering pace, energy, directness and work-rate to emerge as one of League Two’s best talents.

If United does sign the pacey wide-man, the 18-year-old would certainly find it difficult to break into the first-team, however. The step up from League Two to Premier League is massive and it’s highly unlikely to see McCarron take the top-flight by storm.

His signing would be deemed for the future and even if Wilder plans to keep McCarron with the first-team and not send him to the youth ranks, the Bramall Lane faithful shouldn’t expect an immediate impact.

Verdict

McCarron has a big future ahead of him and under Wilder’s watchful eyes he could develop into a fantastic winger.
