Sheffield United Opinion: Why the Blades should go for Mathias Jorgensen?

Sheffield United have a big summer ahead of them, as manager Chris Wilder looks to bring in quality players to bolster his squad, following promotion to the Premier League.

The Blades achieved promotion ahead of Leeds United and West Brom, finishing second only behind an exciting Norwich City side in the Championship table.

Following promotion, Wilder has released five players this week, including the likes of Paul Coutts and Martin Cranie. Now, the Blades boss will be tasked with bringing in fresh faces to bolster the club’s chances of surviving in the Premier League.

In fact, Wilder could have a look at the players from the Premier League’s three relegated teams—Huddersfield Town, Fulham and Cardiff City. One player Sheffield United should look to sign in the summer transfer window is Huddersfield Town defender, Mathias Jorgensen.

Mathias Jorgensen, 29, has been one of the rare bright sparks for Huddersfield, who have leaked in 75 goals this season. The rangy Dane has performed decently at the back in what has been a forgettable season for the Terriers.

With Huddersfield going down, Jorgensen would be keen to stay in the top-flight, as he is too good for Championship football. Sheffield United can certainly offer the tough-tackling defender a Premier League lifeline when the transfer window re-opens.

Martin Cranie is set to leave Bramall Lane at the end of the season and Wilder will need an experienced replacement. Beyond the likes of John Egan, Jake O’Connell and Chris Basham, the Blades have almost no defensive cover. That’s where the signing of Jorgensen would make utmost sense for Wilder and company.

Jorgensen may not be a starter, but he’ll be an excellent option to have in the squad. The big Dane will bring in experience and quality to the Sheffield backline, whilst adding some much-needed depth to the squad. Injuries and suspensions are part and parcel of the game and it’s in those moments the presence of the defender will come handy.

The Copenhagen-born defender boasts incredible strength and is very commanding in the air. The 29-year-old can be an authoritative figure at the back and has a no-nonsense attitude to defending. Also, he could be available on a bargain deal in the summer due to Huddersfield’s relegation.

Verdict

The potential acquisition of a proven defender like Jorgensen will undoubtedly bolster Wilder’s defensive options at the Bramall Lane. Thus, the Blades should consider meeting Huddersfield’s asking price so that the transfer can go through without any trouble.
