According to a report from the Daily Mail, newly-promoted Sheffield United have made an offer to free agent Antonio Valencia.
The Ecuadorian international, 33, spent almost a decade at Manchester United, making 339 appearances in the process. The Red Devils released the right-back at the end of last season, but it remains to be seen where Antonio Valencia will be playing his football when the 2019/20 season kicks off, having been linked with a number of clubs in the United States.
So one has to wait and watch Valencia’s next destination after the upcoming Copa America. There is a chance of Bramall Lane being his destination, with Chris Wilder’s side having submitted an offer to sign him.
Sheffield United have a big summer ahead of them, with Blades boss Chris Wilder is looking to strengthen his squad, after guiding the team to automatic promotion to the Premier League. But after a strong campaign in the Championship, a number of their players have attracted interest from other clubs, including George Baldock.
Baldock has been heavily linked with Celtic, with the Express claiming the Scottish champions made an enquiry about a £3m deal. The wing-back is about to enter the final year of his contract and Wilder would be wise to cash him rather losing him for free next summer. And by selling Baldock, Sheffield United must replace him with veteran Antonio Valencia.
Valencia has transformed from a speedy winger into a reliable right-back in recent seasons and his attack-minded approach should suit Wilder’s style of play. Wilder plays a 3-4-1-2 formation, meaning the Ecuadorian will have to compete with Kieron Freeman for the right wing-back position. The ex-Manchester United skipper is past his prime but he still can offer at least a couple of years at the highest level.
The Blades will want to add more experience and quality to their squad as they take on the Premier League. And Valencia could be a fantastic option to have in the squad, a leader and a competent defender who gives everything on the pitch.
This would be a great signing for Sheffield United, especially on a free transfer. Valencia played for the biggest club in England for almost a decade and already has plenty of Premier League experience.
