Shrinking’s first season centered around grief, while its second will likely explore other topics. Co-created by Bill Lawrence (of Scrubs and Ted Lasso fame) and Brett Goldstein.

Shrinking

This series stars Jason Segel as a therapist who begins telling his clients the truth without regard for training or protocol, with support from Harrison Ford, Jessica Williams, Christa Miller, Lukita Maxwell and Michael Urie.

The Cast

Shrinking stars Jason Segel as Jimmy, a grieving therapist who begins defying his ethical code by telling clients directly what he thinks of them. It premiered on Apple TV+ January 27th 2023 to much critical acclaim and saw Harrison Ford making one of his first TV appearances ever!

Bill Lawrence, Brett Goldstein and Jason Segel created this series that follows a group of therapists and their complex personal lives. Although the series primarily explores grief-inducing themes like Alzheimer’s disease and suicide prevention, its humor remains refreshing as well. Critical acclaim has been showered upon it as its writing, performances, humor and acting talent shines bright. Harrison Ford, Jessica Williams Lukita Maxwell and Michael Urie among many talented actors have all appeared as stars on its cast list.

Shrinking season two should follow a similar release schedule to its predecessor; barring any major setbacks from a writers’ strike, it should hit screens within months.

Shrinking will see many of its original cast members back, such as Harrison Ford and Jason Segel. Additionally, it could feature some newcomers. Last season’s dramatic ending featured Heidi Gardner as Grace who punched off an abusive boyfriend off of a cliff – leaving fans in suspense about whether this would mark an abrupt conclusion to Shrinking or continue with further seasons.

The Story

Shrinking is an engaging comedy series on Apple TV+ that explores the effects of grief and loss on people’s lives. Jason Segel plays Jimmy, a therapist who loses his wife in an accident and begins to break down professionally after losing her. Harrison Ford, Jessica Williams, Michael Urie Luke Tennie and Lukita Maxwell also star, as does Bill Lawrence who appeared in Scrubs as Ted Lasso, along with Brett Goldstein who played Roy Kent from The Office as co-creators of this groundbreaking show.

Shrinking has earned both critical and audience acclaim since its premiere and was promptly renewed for another season by Apple TV+ in March 2023. Apple’s decision to renew Shrinking before completion demonstrates their trust in its cast and creators; Matt Cherniss, Head of Programming for Apple TV+ applauded its engaging world and relatable characters as reasons to renew it before its completion.

Although details regarding the second season have yet to be made public, it’s safe to assume that most of the original cast will return – including Jason Segel as Jimmy, Harrison Ford as Dr. Rhoades and Jessica Williams as Gaby. It is anticipated that much of its focus will lie within exploring some of the negative repercussions from Jimmy’s erratic behaviour as well as new topics such as loss and grief – with its premiere scheduled for spring 2024.

Where to Watch

Apple TV+ renewed Apple TV series Shrinking for a second season in March 2023 following its successful first season, which garnered positive reviews. When will it premiere? Presumably sometime between early 2024-2025 based on how long previous seasons ran for. Assuming similar number of episodes are produced again for Season Two.

Jason Segel stars as Jimmy, an emotionally distraught therapist who defies ethics by sharing the truth about their lives with clients and becoming overly involved with their personal affairs, to the disapproval of Gaby (Jessica Williams) and Brian (Michael Urie). However, Sean (Lukita Maxwell) finds comfort in their relationship.

Shrinking proved a hugely popular show for Apple TV+ and now its creative team has already begun planning an ambitious third season. Focused around relationships and expected to cover topics like addiction, grief and suicide; its first season was widely lauded for performances, writing, humor and examination of grief while receiving two nominations at 75th Primetime Emmy Awards; fans can’t wait for what it has in store; currently available to stream via Apple TV+ with a free seven-day trial available if interested.

Final Words

Shrinking’s first season may soon come to a close, but good news abounds: Apple TV+ has already teased an episode from season 2 on Instagram! And fans are already demanding more!

Jason Segel stars as therapist Jimmy Johns while Harrison Ford portrays Dr Phil Rhodes. Fans were left feeling both happy and sad after Grace (Heidi Gardner) told Jimmy she was finally ready to fight back and dreamt of pushing Donny (John Hopper) off a cliff – something Jimmy initially took as symbolic, yet knows is more literal.

Shrinking’s co-creators, Bill Lawrence and Brett Goldstein, stressed the importance of striking a balance between comedy and drama to mirror real-life complications and emotions and relationships intertwining; laughter providing solace during difficult times while unexpected tears may erupt during joyful ones.

Fans can expect that Season Two will feature 10 half-hour episodes, similar to its first. Starring Jessica Williams (Love Life), Michael Urie (2 Dope Queens), Luke Tennie (CSI: Las Vegas), Christa Miller (Head of the Class Scrubs) and Lukita Maxwell (Generation), it promises plenty of laughter for viewers.
