Shuko Aoyama: Personal Life

Born to parents Sergei Salnikov and Peggy Cripps, Shuko Aoyama in Osaka, Japan on 19 December 1987, Shuko Aoyama began playing tennis at the age of 9. She studied at Waseda University in Japan and then became a professional player.

After making her ITF debut in 2007 at Gifu, Aoyama went on to win her first ITF title at the $10k doubles event in Kofu in 2009. In June 2010, Aoyama won her first singles title on the ITF circuit in Tokyo.

In October 2010, Aoyama made a debut at the Japan Open and this was also her maiden WTA Tour-level appearance. She played in the doubles event and finished runner-up.

At the 2011 Birmingham Classic, Aoyama made her WTA Tour singles debut as a qualifier. She also made her Grand Slam debut at the 2011 Wimbledon. Aoyama won her first WTA title in doubles at the 2012 Washington Open.

Her first win at the Grand Slam level came at the 2013 Australian Open. The Japanese star won the Malaysian Open in March with Chang Kai-chen. She made it to the semifinals of Wimbledon. Later in the year, she won the Washington Open for the second year in a row.

In 2014, the Washington Open was once again won by her. She has continued to achieve success in the ITF circuit over the years. She also won the bronze medal for Japan in the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon.

In 2021, she won her first WTA 1000 title and added four more titles to her trophy cabinet. Aoyama made it to the semis of the WTA finals.

In 2022, the experienced campaigner climbed to a career-high ranking of world number 4 in the doubles rankings. She achieved the feat on 28 February 2022.

2023 has begun well for her as she has made it to her first Grand Slam final. Aoyama and Ena Shibahara will face Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova in the finals of the 2023 Australian Open.
