Burnley enjoyed a great season last term as they finished 7th in the league. The Clarets ended the campaign with 54 points, which was 14 more than their previous season’s tally, and nine places higher up the league table.
Surprisingly, they were able to do so by scoring fewer goals. They only managed to find the net 36 times over the course of the entire season which is less than a goal per game. Incidentally, they only conceded 39 times, which was the 6th-lowest in the league.
With all the teams adding reinforcements in the ongoing summer transfer window, Burnley will have to add to their strike force if they are to remain in the top-10 next season. That said, a report from Sky Sports has linked Burnley with West Brom’s Jay Rodriguez. However, the Baggies want more than £20m for the forward.
The forward had a pretty decent season as he managed to score 7 goals in 37 appearances for the club. Over the years, he has built a reputation for being technically proficient and his finishing skills are top-notch as well.
He’s good at finding spaces in the final third, which often provides his team with the opportunity to play those long balls over the top.
However, the forward has always had issues with consistency and is not the best passer of the ball. If Burnley truly pursue a move for him, they will have to figure out a system to accommodate both Chris Wood and Rodriguez up front.
Since Wood plays a more central role, they should use Rodriguez on the flanks to give themselves more width while attacking. Should Burnley fans be excited about this transfer? Yes, they should.
We’re talking about a highly experienced player who has played a lot of seasons in the Premier League. And with Rodriguez in the mix, Burnley should be able to fight for a place in the top-10 next term.
It’s not always that a team gets away with scoring a fewer number of goals and Burnley should count themselves lucky that they didn’t suffer because of that. Signing Rodriguez would help them solve this problem.
