The world No. 31 Holger Rune takes on the 25-year-old Tim van Rijthoven in an exciting first-round clash at the Sofia Open 2022 on Tuesday.
Holger Rune
The Danish youngster won his first title in 2022 at the Sanremo Challenger in April. He bagged his first ATP tour-level title at the BMW Open and became the tournament’s third youngest champion in the Open Era after Guillermo Perez-Roldan in 1987.
Rune produced a fine result in the Lyon Open where he made it to the semi-finals. He followed it up with his best result at a major when he reached the French Open quarter-finals. Since then, the 19-year-old has been struggling with inconsistency. He has been ousted in the first match on seven occasions out of the ten tournaments he has played, coming into the Sofia Open.
Tim van Rijthoven
The 25-year-old has mostly played in Challenged events this year and has put in some decent performances. His biggest triumph came in the Libema Open, where he defeated the then world No. 2 and top seed – Daniil Medvedev, in straight sets in the final.
Rijthoven is coming into the tournament after crashing out of the US Open earlier in the month in the second round. He won the first set but ended up losing the next three to eventual runner-up Casper Ruud.
