The impressive Jannik Sinner begins his Sofia Open campaign against world No. 93 Nuno Borges in the round of 16 on Thursday.
Jannik Sinner
The top seed has won 42 matches in 2022 and lost just 12. He has been in stellar form this season. Sinner won the Croatia Open by defeating defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in the final. The 21-year-old also made it to the quarter-finals at the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open for the first time in his career.
Sinner is coming into the tournament after having lost a highly-appreciated quarter-final match with Carlos Alcaraz at the US Open. He is certainly one of the hot favorites to lift the title.
Nuno Borges
The 25-year-old has put in some decent performances in the Challenger events this year. He made it to the semi-finals in Forli, which was also the first tournament he played this year. He has also made it to another semifinal in Oeiras. Borges also reached a final in March but his best outing came in the Challenger event in Barletta, where he won the title.
In the round of 32 of the Sofia Open, Borges lost the first set to Mirza Basic but made a strong comeback to eventually win the match 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. The Portuguese youngster will have his task cut out as he faces one of the rising stars of men’s tennis in the round of 16.
