Southampton Opinion: Why Che Adams would be a smart fit at St. Mary’s?
According to a report from the Daily Mail, Southampton have seen a new £8 million bid for Che Adams rejected by Birmingham City.
Che Adams, 22, is one of the hottest properties in the Championship, and enjoyed a stellar campaign at the Blues, scoring an impressive 22 goals. He has a number of clubs showing interest after a top season in the Championship but Birmingham are reluctant to sell one of their best players cheaply.
The Blues will clearly not make it easy for Southampton to get their man, but Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side must return with a fresh offer before it is too late.
Southampton huffed and puffed before achieving safety in the Premier League last season. The Saints looked set for relegation under Mark Hughes, but the appointment of Ralph Hasenhuttl changed the team’s fortunes drastically. The Austrian tactician employed a pressing, energetic and expansive brand of football at St. Mary’s, unlike his predecessor’s insipid and lacklustre style.
One of the Saints’ serious problems last season was lack of goals. While they need to tighten up at the back to stem the flow of goals next season, signing a reliable goalscorer should be Hasenhuttl’s need of the hour.
In Shane Long, Danny Ings, Nathan Redmond and Charlie Austin, Southampton will continue to struggle for goals. This attack isn’t blessed with a consistent goalscorer and above all, Austin wants to quit the St. Mary’s in search of more regular opportunities. That means Hasenhuttl must bolster his forward department and a move for Che Adams would be a step in the right direction.
Adams is now one of the most in-demand players in the country after enjoying a hugely impressive campaign with Birmingham City. Blessed with pace, power and physicality, the 22-year-old is a deadly finisher in front of goal and will bring some much-needed dynamism to Southampton’s attack. He is a physical presence who can win aerial battles, create chances for his teammates and make runs in behind defenders.
The ex-Sheffield United ace’s goalscoring ability is fantastic and combined with his work-rate and energy, it effectively makes him ideal to lead Southampton’s attack under Hasenhuttl. Adams can lead the line, play as a secondary striker or on the left of front three, which means he’ll give the Southampton manager tactical flexibility as well.

Not only will the 22-year-old bring quality to the Saints attack, but also add depth to the squad.
Verdict
Southampton need goals if they are to have a good 2019/20 season in the Premier League. Adams is more than capable of stepping up to top-flight next campaign, and he’d be a perfect signing for Hasenhuttl’s side.
