Southampton Opinion: Why the Saints should make a move for Tom Rogic?

According to a report from Sydney Morning Herald, Premier League duo Southampton and Leicester City are keen to sign Celtic star Tom Rogic this summer.

The Australian, 26, joined Celtic from Central Coast Mariners back in 2013 and has been a star performer for the Hoops since then. Tom Rogic helped Celtic win the double treble last season under the tutelage of former manager Brendan Rodgers, who wants him at Leicester City next season.

The midfielder, who has scored three goals and assisted six times in 20 Premiership games this season, has also caught the attention of Southampton.

Southampton managed to narrowly beat the drop from the Premier League this term under the leadership of Ralph Hasenhuttl. Hasenhuttl’s appointment was deemed as a gamble, but it has paid off well.

The Austrian galvanised a squad depleted of confidence and energy to safety when it looked almost impossible under his predecessor, Mark Hughes.

But Hasenhuttl’s good work at St. Mary’s until now will count for nothing if the club doesn’t back him significantly in the summer transfer window. There is a lot of room for improvement in the current Southampton squad and it’s important the Austrian tactician brings in the right profile of players to challenge for a top-half finish.

The Saints have found huge success over the years by recruiting players from Celtic, with the likes of Victor Wanyama, Virgil van Dijk and Stuart Armstrong adapting quickly to the demands of the Premier League. Southampton are thought to have watched Tom Rogic for the last two seasons, so his signing certainly won’t be a gamble if the deal goes through.

Rogic is an attacking midfielder by trade, but he is equally adept at playing on either wing and or as a central midfielder. The Australian is noted for creativity, vision, quick feet, sharpness on the ball and eye for goal. He likes to pick up promising positions in the final third to have a crack on goal as well as set up his teammates.

Known for his sublime passing, accurate crossing and intelligent link-up play, the 26-year-old tends to move the ball around quickly in the final third and creates chances with his incisive passing. His vision and skill-set might be his most prized attributes, but Rogic is more than capable of creating space for himself and getting inside the box to score goals.

Verdict

With Hasenhuttl at the helm, Southampton have an astute tactician, who has already shown his eye for nurturing young talents. As the Saints have stayed up, there is no reason why they cannot move themselves further up the table.

A few additions over the summer and Hasenhuttl has a capable team, one which could and should push on for a top 10 finish. And a player in the mould of Rogic would definitely be beneficial in helping the Sea Coast club in achieving their targets next season.
