Southampton Opinion: Why the Saints should sign Bartlomiej Dragowski?

According to Italian news outlet Tuttomercatoweb, Southampton, West Ham and Huddersfield Town are eyeing a summer move for Fiorentina goalkeeper Bartlomiej Dragowski.

The Pole, 21, who is currently on loan at Empoli – is highly rated in Italy. He wrote his name into the history books back in April when he made a remarkable 17 saves in a goalless draw against Atalanta. The young goalkeeper has been one of Empoli’s rare bright sparks in an otherwise disappointing campaign.

Bartlomiej Dragowski will return to Fiorentina next month following the expiry of his loan spell at Empoli. Fiorentina are unlikely to sell the highly-rated 21-year-old but the player himself could force a move in search of first-team football.

Considering his performances throughout the season with Empoli, Southampton must beat West Ham and Huddersfield Town to the signature of Bartlomiej Dragowski.

Alex McCarthy started the 2018/19 season as Southampton’s no.1 under then manager Mark Hughes. Following a series of poor results, Hughes was sacked and replaced by Ralph Hasenhuttl. Hasenhuttl quickly changed the team’s dynamics and brought confidence to the Saints side that was flirting with relegation.

One of the changes the Austrian manager made was in the goalkeeping department, as McCarthy’s poor form saw Angus Gunn get a chance to prove his worth. Gunn vindicated Hasenhuttl’s decision with some fine performances between the sticks and didn’t relinquish his place in the starting XI as Southampton avoided relegation.

It was a tough decision to hand Gunn his Southampton debut in January especially when the team was in the relegation zone, but that just showed the faith Hasenhuttl has in youth. Gunn now looks the undoubted no.1. So that leaves Hasenhuttl with the task of bringing in a goalkeeper to challenge for the former Manchester City man.

McCarthy is expected to be a back-up next season, while Fraser Forster will leave the club after managing only a single appearance in the 2018/19. That being said, the Saints will be wise to bring in Dragowski.

Dragowski looks to be one of the most talented young goalkeepers in the world and he’ll compete with Gunn for the no.1 spot in the team. The Pole is a commanding presence in the box and has the tendency to come out of his line to clear out potential danger.

Although he is relatively inexperienced at the highest level, Dragowski has shown tremendous promise so far in his career and should be a good fit at St. Mary’s.

Verdict

Hasenhuttl has already shown his faith in youth and wants to build a young, exciting and talented Southampton squad. And in that squad, there has to be a place for the promising Dragowski.
