Why Southampton must secure a loan deal for Ryan Sessegnon
According to The Telegraph, Southampton are interested in signing Tottenham Hotspur starlet Ryan Sessegnon on loan for the rest of the 2020/21 season.
The report indicates that other clubs like Burnley and Brighton & Hove Albion are also looking at the player. Tottenham are said to be open to the idea of loaning out Sessegnon.

Ryan Sessegnon is a 20-year-old English full-back who plays for Tottenham Hotspur. He started his youth career at Fulham’s academy in 2008 and progressed through the underage teams.
In 2016, he was promoted to the senior team. However, it was not until the next season that Sessegnon showed his true potential. He scored 15 goals in the EFL Championship in 2017-18 and was a part of the side that got promoted to the Premier League.
The next season, he found it difficult to replicate his form in the Premier League, as Fulham were relegated. However, his talent did not go unrecognised as Spurs signed him ahead of last season. He left Fulham after 120 appearances, scoring 25 and assisting 18. (h/t Transfermarkt)
It wasn’t smooth sailing at Spurs, as Sessegnon struggled for game time with injuries and form. He featured just 12 times over the entirety of the 2019/20 season for his new club.
Why Southampton should sign him on loan
Southampton could do with a new left-back, given that Ryan Bertrand is the only senior option available at Ralph Hasenhuttl’s disposal presently. Sam McQueen is sidelined with a cruciate ligament injury, while young Jake Vokins lacks experience at this level.
Thus, bringing in Sessegnon on loan would make sense for the Saints. In addition, he is also capable of playing as a left-midfielder or a left-winger. This kind of versatility and flexibility would provide Hasenhuttl with added options to tweak his side and rest his key players as and when needed.

Verdict
With the deal being a temporary loan in nature, the risk involved is very less for Southampton. They would not have to pay any transfer fees and can have a rather talented player for a year.
Spurs would also get some relief after spending so much in the transfer window. It would also be the best move for Sessegnon himself. He can move away from the limelight and get more opportunities.
At Spurs he would have to contend with the likes of Heung-Min Son and Steven Bergwijn at left-wing and Sergio Reguilon and Ben Davies at left-back. It is a deal that works for everyone and Southampton should definitely go ahead with this.
