Southampton Opinion: Why Moussa Djenepo will be a good fit for the Saints

According to a report from the Southern Daily Echo, Southampton are interested in signing Standard Liege starlet Moussa Djenepo.

The Mali international, 20, has enjoyed a solid season with Standard Liege in Belgium. He has played 37 times for the Belgian outfit this season, scoring 11 goals and supplying six assists. The youngster’s performances have caught the eye of Southampton, who will need to pay in the region of £20 million to acquire the Malian’s services, adds the report.

Southampton looked destined for relegation at one point this season, but the appointment of Ralph Hasenhuttl at the right time has helped the club retain its top-flight status. The Saints may have avoided the drop but without adequate reinforcements over the summer, the club could again find themselves fighting relegation next term.

After guiding Southampton to safety in the top flight, Hasenhuttl now faces the big job of rebuilding the club. The Austrian tactician needs to pump in fresh blood into the squad to try and challenge for a place in the top half of the league in the 2019/20 campaign.

The performances of the likes of James Ward-Prowse, Nathan Redmond, Yan Valery, Jan Bednarek, Stuart Armstrong and Pierre-Emile Hojberg under Hasenhuttl should fill the Southampton fans with a ton of hope for the future but there are a few areas of concern which will need serious addressing in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Scoring goals has been a problem for the Saints and it’s the area Hasenhuttl needs to reinforce ahead of the start of the new campaign. One player who could be an excellent addition for Hasenhuttl’s side is Moussa Djenepo, even though the 20-year-old being an unknown quantity.

Predominantly a left-winger, Djenepo has the ability to play anywhere across the front three and also as a no.10. He is a fantastic dribbler and has the capability to score and create goals in equal measure. The Malian has blistering pace in his locker which helps him complete dribbles at top speed in the opposition half.

He has also added lots of goals and assists to his game which is a remarkable feat for a player of his tender age. The 20-year-old can form a phenomenal attacking partnership with Redmond and Ward-Prowse next to him and with the constant switching of positions among the front three, Southampton will be a force next season.

Verdict

The potential addition of a player of Djenepo’s will undoubtedly improve Hasenhuttl’s attacking options at the St. Mary’s. The Saints could benefit from landing the 20-year-old as Hasenhuttl has what it takes to make the most out of talented young guns.

However, he is still raw so the Sea Coast club would need to be patient with him if they are to see the player gradually develop himself into a world beater.
