Agent discloses transfer talks with Sevilla for Davinson Sanchez

Nestor Villarreal, the agent of Tottenham Hotspur defender Davinson Sanchez, revealed talks with Sevilla regarding a potential transfer for his client when he spoke in an interview with Caracol Radio (football.london). The defender could leave Spurs in the summer window, as his agent did not rule a possibility for a move.

“Yes, I have spoken to the people of Sevilla, but at the moment, they have a full squad. If a transfer happens on their part, those rumours could be true, but concretely there is nothing, only talks.”

Tottenham could use Davinson Sanchez

Spurs cannot afford to lose more centre-backs before they bring someone in. Jan Vertonghen going to SL Benfica last year meant Toby Alderweireld had to find a new partner for himself in the Spurs defence. Now, the other Belgian defender has also departed from N17 as he has joined Qatari side, Al-Duhail, ahead of the new Premier League new season.

That leaves Eric Dier, Japhet Tanganga, and Joe Rodon as the club’s three options at centre-back apart from Sanchez. Tanganga (22) and former Swansea defender Rodon (23) are both relatively inexperienced for the Lilywhites in the Premier League as they have been below the Alderweireld and Dier in the pecking order.

Expecting one of them to take over the reins after Alderweireld’s departure seems premature. In the same vein, Cameron Carter-Vickers does not seem like a potential solution to Spurs’ defensive conundrum right now. The 23-year-old American has been sent out on six separate loan spells in the past four years, showing a lack of faith in him by multiple Spurs managers.

On top of that, a report by Football Insider (h/t Shields Gazette) stated last month that both Celtic and Newcastle United are considering a move for Carter-Vickers. Tanganga, similarly, is linked with an exit this summer and according to The Athletic (Subscription Required), Galatasaray submitted a loan bid for the Spurs youngster.

Spurs should avoid Sanchez sale

With so much uncertainty regarding their defensive line, it’s wise to keep Sanchez. The 25-year-old Colombian international has been at the club since his move from Ajax in 2017 and becomes one of the senior figures in their defence after Alderweireld’s sale. It’s not like Spurs are not looking for a centre-back in the market.

The club is linked with defenders such as Cristian Romero and Takehiro Tomiyasu. But they should find a good mix between players who know the club well by now, and pairing them with any new faces that come in their team this summer. Sanchez can be the man to partner any potential incomings in Spurs defence next season.

If not that, then the former Ajax man can surely be a capable backup for when Nuno Espirito Santo needs to rotate his squad or if there’s an injury. And with his contract not expiring until 2024, it’s not like Fabio Paratici and Daniel Levy would be under urgent pressure to sell him. Hence, keeping him makes way more sense for the club than seeing his back in this transfer window.
