The show’s creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, has let slip that fan favorites like Gi-hun and the Front Man will be back. And that’s not all – at the Tudum global fan event, Netflix revealed that fresh faces including Yim Si-Wan, Kang Ha-Neul, Park Sung-Hoon, and Yang Dong-Geun will be joining the lineup for the upcoming season. Stay tuned!
1. Release Date
Netflix has officially confirmed Squid Game will return for season 2, even though its finale ended with an explosive cliffhanger. At an Squid Game event in Los Angeles in November 2021, director Hwang Dong-hyuk informed attendees they will indeed get another series.
At the event, he also hinted that Squid Game season 2 may explore the backstories of its supporting characters such as Front Man and Salesman, before providing insight into police work by following officers as they seek answers to mysteries in their communities.
Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s Chief Content Officer has made it clear that season two will indeed happen. During a Q&A session he said “the Squid Game universe has only just begun”, promising fans more drama-filled episodes in season two.
Lee Jung-jae, who won the first game and earned himself a Screen Actors Guild Award, will likely star in Squid Game season 2. Other cast members such as Lee Byung-hun and Wi Ha-jun may return; however, some others won’t as their characters were killed off in season one.
New actors will step into their shoes. Jo Yu Ri, former member of K-pop group IZ*ONE, will join the cast as Young-hee’s boyfriend Cheol-su. Additionally, Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul Park Sung Hoon and Yang Dong Geun will appear as supporting cast.
2. Cancellation
Squid Game’s second season has yet to be approved, but its creators have begun work on a script and recruiting writers. Hwang told The Times in October that future episodes may explore Front Man and his brother as well as Gong Yoo’s Salesman character’s background.
Squid Game proved a hit for Netflix, becoming their most-watched series ever. This success can be attributed to its jaw-dropping set pieces, clever twists and talented cast – including Lee Jung-jae as Seong Gi-hun, Wi Ha-jun as Front Man, Park Hye-soo as steely businessman Cho Sang-woo and Hoyeon Jung as enigmatic North Korean defector Kang Sae-byeok.
Though Squid Game season 2 cast has yet to be confirmed, many of its original actors may reprise their roles. According to Gi-hun’s creator, Gi-hun will investigate who is behind deadly competition games; and will also examine his brother’s involvement. Front Man and Salesman as well as participant recruiter Gong Yoo will return, alongside Front Man himself (Front Man and Salesman respectively). It is expected that Netflix will host Squid Game season 2.
3. Cast
After Squid Game‘s initial success, Netflix quickly renewed it for season 2. At a global TUDUM event in June 2023, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk made his announcement about Season 2, with Lee Jung-jae returning as Seong Gi-hun (Lee Byung-hun is back as In-ho, Front Man Lee Byung-hun returns as In-ho) and Wi Ha-jun returning as Hwang Jun-ho (Wi Ha-jun).
Park Hae-soo’s character Sang-woo and Jung Hoyeon’s Kang Sae-byeok both died during season 1, thus they will not return. Hwang hinted that season 2 may delve further into supporting characters’ backstories – such as Front Man’s police officer brother and Gong Yoo’s salesperson character.
Netflix recently confirmed that eight new actors have joined the season 2 cast of Big Brother: World of Dance, including Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Sung-hoon and Yang Dong-geun. These four join returning cast members Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha Jun and Gong Yoo as returning cast members; Choi Seung-hun as VIP player Il Nam should draw in even more viewers given his fame as former BIGBANG member Choi Seung-hun also made his acting debut with Ditto 2021 before appearing in multiple K-dramas since.
