Stan Wawrinka: Early life
Stan Wawrinka was born on 28 March 1985 in Lausanne, Switzerland, to a German father and Swiss mother. Wawrinka holds dual citizenship in both Switzerland and Germany. Wawrinka grew up with his elder brother, Jonathan, and two younger sisters, Djanaee and Nella. The tennis star attended the Rudolf Steiner School in Crissier. He can speak French, English, and Spanish. His parents work on an organic farm, where they employ and help handicapped people.

Wawrinka began playing tennis at the young age of 8. His first coach was Dimitri Zavialoff. He stopped attending regular schooling at the age of 15 and invested his full focus in shaping his tennis career. He continued with his studies in the French organization CNED, which allowed distance education.
Wawrinka turned professional in 2002 at the age of 17. He reached the finals in four Grand Slam tournaments and managed to win three of them in his career till now. He won the 2014 Australian Open, the 2015 French Open, and the 2016 US Open. Interestingly, he defeated the then-world no. 1 ranked player on all three occasions in the finals of all the three Grand Slam events (Rafael Nadal once and Novak Djokovic twice).
As far as doubles and team tennis is concerned, Wawrinka has won a gold medal in the men’s doubles event at the 2008 Summer Olympics, teaming with fellow Swiss tennis star Roger Federer, and the Davis Cup in 2014.
Wawrinka is only the second Swiss tennis player to win a Grand Slam after Roger Federer. Wawrinka also has the record of playing in the longest doubles match in history at the 2013 edition of the Davis Cup, in a match against the Czech Republic. He is currently coached by Daniel Vallverdu.
He underwent a couple of left knee surgeries in 2017 and a couple of left foot surgeries in 2021.
