Sterling started his college basketball career at Proviso East High School. Brown became a vital part of the squad, leading the Pirates to a State runner-up finish and a state semi-final appearance. But unfortunately, the Pirates ended up on the losing side.
Brown made a choice to enter SMU to train under the guidance of coach Larry Brown. In college, his freshman year started with an injury, that made him miss the NCAA tournament. His sophomore year and junior year were quite similar to his junior season. But during his senior year, he made a comeback as he averaged 13.4 points and 6.5 rebounds per match that season. Brown was awarded second-team All-conference for his brilliant performance throughout the season.
The 27-year-old made attention by participating in the NABC college All-star game and also in the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament. His impressive skills were noticed by various NBA team officials. Before the 2017 NBA draft, Brown was expected to be picked in the second round. As expected the Philadelphia 76ers drafted Brown in the second round as the 46th pick in the 2017 NBA draft. On October 2017, Brown was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks for cash consideration by the 76ers. He made his NBA debut against the Cleveland Cavaliers. With no time Brown was shifted to the G-league team, the Wisconsin Herd. In his debut match for the Herds, he scored 14 points.
Brown’s NBA career almost ended when he was arrested by the Milwaukee Police Department in 2018. News spread all over the NBA fans and the NBA federation was thinking of blocking his NBA license. A few months after the arrest, the court declared Brown innocent and found it was the police officers who were caught guilty of racially abusing Brown.
The Houston Rockets signed Brown in 2020. In 2021, a fight in the nightclub caused several injuries to the face and made him rest for several matches. On August 2021, Brown was signed by the Dallas Mavericks and made his debut for Dallas against the Atlanta Hawks. In the 2022 season, he played for the Houston Rockets and was shifted to the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Thunders waived Brown on October 2.
