Steven Stamkos Career
Stamkos is of Macedonian and Scottish descent and grew up in Unionville, Ontario, playing for the Markham Waxers in the OMHA. He won eight OMHA titles and led his club to the OHL Cup title in March 2006. He attended Central Park Public School and St. Brother André Catholic High School before being drafted by the Sarnia Sting and attending Northern Collegiate Institute and Vocational School. He played in the 2003 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with the Markham Waxers.
After scoring 197 points over 66 games for the Waxers, Stamkos was selected first overall in the 2006 OHL Draft by the Sarnia Sting. He recorded 92 points as a rookie and improved to 105 points the following season, winning several awards including the CHL Top Draft Prospect Award.
In 2008-09, Steven Stamkos played his first NHL game in Prague, Czech Republic. The Lightning lost 2-1 to the New York Rangers and was swept in Prague. Stamkos recorded his first point in his eighth game against the Toronto Maple Leafs. He scored his first goal in the following game against the Buffalo Sabres.
Despite being criticized for his lack of production early on in his rookie season, he finished with 23 goals and 46 points. Prior to the 2009-10 season, Stamkos trained with former NHL player Gary Roberts and had a breakout season, scoring 51 goals and 95 points. Stamkos scored his 100th career goal in December 2010, and he was named to play in the NHL All-Star Game in January 2011.
Stamkos returned from a knee injury in October 2017 and tied Vincent Lecavalier for the most power-play goals in franchise history. He reached his 600th career NHL point and tied Martin St. Louis for the longest season-opening point streak. Stamkos was voted the Atlantic Division captain at the 2018 National Hockey League All-Star Game and recorded his 300th career NHL assist.
