The 19-year-old Holger Rune locks horns with the world No. 23 Alex de Minaur in the semi-finals of the Stockholm Open on Saturday.
After winning the Atlanta Open, Alex de Minaur went on a quiet spell with a couple of first-round exits and nothing much to write home about. In fact, he came into the Stockholm Open on the back of a dismal showing in the Japan Open, where he crashed out in the first round itself.
Stockholm has been a different story though for the Australian star. He has not dropped a set so far in the competition. He began his campaign with a comprehensive 6-3, 6-1 victory against the Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi. In the round of 16, the 23-year-old came up against Jeffrey John Wolf. The match was a one-sided affair as Alex de Minaur won the match 6-4, 6-2. In the quarter-finals, de Minaur started strongly against Denis Shapovalov. After bagging the first set without breaking much sweat, the youngster from Down Under had to weather a storm from the Canadian tennis pro in the second set. The match eventually ended 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) in favor of Alex.
The Danish youngster is just one win away from reaching consecutive finals. He came into the Stockholm Open on the back of a run to the finals at the Sofia Open. The rub of the green did not go Rune’s way in the final as he lost to Marc-Andrea Huesler but the world No. 27 has not let that result bog him down.
Rune won his first match against Thiago Monteiro in straight sets in the first round. He followed it up with another comprehensive win against Cristian Garin in straight sets 7-6 (7-2), 6-1 in the second round. In the quarter-finals, Rune produced a terrific display of grit and determination as he ousted the British No. 1, Cameron Norrie, after dropping the first set. The match eventually ended 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 6-3 in favor of the youngster.
The head-to-head scoreline currently stands at 0-0 as the two players have not faced each other as yet.
Prediction: Holger Rune to win in three sets.
