The world No. 27 Holger Rune locks horns with world No. 81 Cristian Garin in the round of 16 of the Stockholm Open on Wednesday.
The 19-year-old will remember this year very fondly as he bagged his first tour-level title by winning the 2022 BMW Open in May. He also managed to make it to the quarter-finals of a major for the first time courtesy of some fine performances at the 2022 French Open.
After a run to the finals of the Sofia Open, the Polish sensation defeated Brazil’s Thiago Monteiro in the round of 32 of the Stockholm Open in straight sets 7-5, 6-2. He will look to build on the comprehensive performance as he faces Garin up next.
The Chilean No. 2 has produced some decent results in 2022 but they have been few and far between. In Houston, Garin made it to the semi-finals. However, his standout result came at Wimbledon, where he reached the quarter-finals. He eventually lost to a rampaging Nick Kyrgios in straight sets.
Garin came into the Stockholm Open on the back of a first-round exit in the Firenze Open after losing to Alexander Bublik in straight sets. In the round of 32 of the Stockholm Open, Garin eased past Jason Kubler as the former finished the match in straight sets 6-2, 6-4.
The head-to-head scoreline stands at 1-0 in favor of Holger Rune. The Polish youngster got the better of Garin in the round of 32 of the Serbia Open earlier this year. The match ended 6-3, 6-1 in favor of Rune.
Prediction: Holger Rune to win in straight sets.
