Why Swansea City should make a move for Jorge Grant in January

According to TEAMtalk (h/t Nottinghamshire Live), Swansea City are among a host of Championship clubs understood to be chasing Lincoln City playmaker Jorge Grant ahead of the January transfer window.

Jorge Grant started his footballing education at Reading and spent time at the Nike Academy before completing his development at Nottingham Forest. He started his professional career at the City Ground during the 2014-15 season but failed to establish himself in a prominent role, making just 20 appearances over the course of five seasons.

The 26-year-old spent time on loan at Notts County and Mansfield Town in League Two as well as at Luton Town in League One before completing a permanent move to Lincoln City in the third-tier in 2019.

Grant accumulated 2 goals and 11 assists in 38 appearances across all competitions for the Imps last season. He has taken his rich vein of form into the ongoing campaign, registering 8 goals and 6 assists in 16 games.

Grant would add more depth to Swansea’s midfield

Swansea City roped in Korey Smith, Morgan Gibbs-White and Kasey Palmer before the summer deadline to bolster their midfield ranks. The three new recruits have all made a positive impression to varying degrees of success at the Liberty Stadium so far. 

While Smith has established himself as an undisputed starter for the Swans in deep midfield, Gibbs-White is currently on the sidelines after having his bright start to the campaign thwarted by a foot injury. The Wolves loanee was expected to be one of Swansea’s key creative outlets but is not expected to return to action by the end of January. 

His absence has forced Steve Cooper to utilise the likes of Palmer and Yan Dhanda in the No.10 role. Despite showing glimpses of promise, neither player has been able to achieve the desired level of consistency.

Hence, with Andre Ayew and Jamal Lowe operating as a part of Cooper’s two-man attack, the door remains open for Swansea to seek some additional cover in the midfield come January.

To put things into perspective, Swansea City completing a deal for Jorge Grant during the mid-season trading period would ensure healthy competition for places in the attacking midfield department.

The 26-year-old struggled to make an impact in the Championship earlier in his career but he definitely deserves another shot at this level after proving his credentials at Lincoln City in League One.

Verdict

Essentially a central midfielder by trade, Grant has the versatility to operate further up the pitch in a No.10 role and also out wide on the flanks. Hence, a potential deal for the Banbury-born star would hand a significant boost to Swansea’s squad depth.

It is important for the Swans to have more than one quality player in each position as that could be really crucial towards the latter half of the campaign when the race for promotion goes down to the wire.
