Roger Federer has won a couple of medals while representing Switzerland in the Olympics

Swiss star Belinda Bencic is hopeful of teaming up with Roger Federer at the 2020 Olympics.

Federer won gold in the doubles back in 2008 and also won silver in the singles clash in 2012.

He didn’t participate in 2016 and hasn’t confirmed if he will play for the Swiss in the upcoming Olympics.

Bencic, who has teamed up with Federer in the Hopman Cup, is hoping that the 20-time Grand Slam champion does play in the Olympics when asked about it by Schweizer Radio und Fernsehen (h/t Tennis 365):

“I hope so. That also depends on his form.

“If he decides to compete in the single and mixed doubles, I would be very happy if we could play together.”

Bencic went on to speak about her time playing with Federer and how she was nervous when she spoke with him:

“When I didn’t know him so well, I was very nervous when I spoke to him,” she said.

“I met him at the Hopman Cup, where he helped me a lot. Even now he always has an open ear for me. He is especially at my side with questions about advanced training and tournament preparation.”

The 22-year-old added that Federer was as “champion” and that he wanted to “help the next generation too.”

More glory for Federer?

It would be incredible if he did play in the 2020 Olympics at the age of 38.

The Swiss has won almost everything there is to win in tennis, but he has never won singles gold in the Olympics.

It will also be interesting to see if Federer is willing to take a break and represent the nation.

Roger Federer
Only Roger Federer (in pic) has a better stats than Rafael Nadal (600 weeks), gathering 748 weeks in the top-3 ATP rankings.

The Olympics are scheduled between 24 July to 9 August and will start just a couple of weeks after the end of Wimbledon.

Federer could increase his Grand Slam count by winning the French Open or Wimbledon, and that could affect his plans for the Olympics.
