The world No. 4 Anett Kontaveit will lock horns with veteran Kaia Kanepi in the semifinals of the Tallinn Open on Saturday.
The 26-year-old Anett Kontaveit has survived a couple of close shaves in the tournament thus far but she certainly seems to be the hot favorite to lift the title.
Kontaveit lost the first set against Xiyu Wang in the first match but came back strongly to level things up by winning the second set. In the decisive third set, the Chinese tennis pro put on a great performance but Kontaveit proved to be just too potent in the end. In the round of 16, Kontaveit eased past Tereza Martincova with a 6-2, 6-1 win. Belgian qualifier Ysaline Bonaventure delivered an impressive performance and took a set off Kontaveit. However, the top seed got the win 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
The 37-year-old is another tennis player who is proving that age is just a number. She has reached her third semifinal in 2022 and would look to use her experience to get the better of her fellow Estonian.
Kanepi began her campaign in Tallinn with a hard-fought win against Jelena Ostapenko. In the first set, the former French Open champion got the better of the experienced campaigner but Kanepi came back with renewed vigor to take the second set. Kanepi bageled Ostapenko in the third set to advance in the tournament. In the round of 16, Kanepi put on a solid performance to edge out Ann Li in straight sets 7-5, 7-5. In the quarter-finals, Kanepi had to dig deep to get the win over Karolina Muchova in a tight match that ended 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (8-6) in favor of the world No. 32.
The head-to-head scoreline stands at 0-0 as Kaia Kanepi and Anett Kontaveit have not faced each other before.
Prediction: Anett Kontaveit to win in three sets.
