Former US Open champion Dominic Thiem locks horns with world No. 72 Laslo Djere in the round of 32 of the Tel Aviv Open 2022 on Monday.
Thiem reached two quarterfinals at the Swedish Open and the Austrian Open and the semifinals at the Swiss Open. The 29-year-old made it to the final in the Challenger event in Rennes where he lost to Ugo Humbert.
At the recently-concluded Metz 2022, Thiem defeated Richard Gasquet in the first round before losing to Hubert Hurkacz in the second. Thiem is not yet at his best but is slowly progressing and this could be the tournament where he gets back to his prime form.
The Serbian tennis pro had a great run at the Grand Prix Hassan II event as he made it to the semifinal. Djere also reached the quarterfinals in the Swedish Open, where he lost to Andrey Rublev in straight sets. The 27-year-old produced his best result this season so far when he reached the finals in the Winston-Salem Open. He lost to French veteran Adrian Mannarino in straight sets.
Djere is coming into the tournament on the back of a couple of disappointing performances. He was ousted in the first round of the US Open and suffered a loss in the qualifying stage in Metz against Stan Wawrinka.
Laslo Djere leads the head-to-head scoreline 1-0. He defeated Thiem in straight sets in the first round of the Rio Open in 2019.
Prediction: Dominic Thiem to win in straight sets.
