Two former US Open champions Dominik Thiem and Marin Cilic will face each other in the round of 16 of the Tel Aviv Open on Wednesday.
The former US Open champion has won 28 out of the 44 matches he has played so far this season. Marin Cilic has struggled for consistency but has produced some sensational performances every now and then. He began the year with a couple of semi-final appearances in Adelaide. He reached the quarter-finals in Qatar.
The 33-year-old made it to the French Open semifinal with wins against Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev in the fourth round and the quarterfinal respectively. The experienced campaigner made it to the semi-finals at the Queen’s Club Championships as well. He is coming into the Tel Aviv Open on the back of a defeat in the round of 16 of the US Open against eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz.
The 29-year-old is on his comeback trail and is slowly building some momentum with decent results in the previous few tournaments he has played.
The Austrian star reached a couple of quarterfinals at the Swedish Open and the Austrian Open and the semifinals at the Swiss Open. He also finished second in the Challenger event in Rennes. In the round of 32 of the Tel Aviv Open, Thiem came back from a set down to defeat Laslo Djere 5-7, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4.
Dominic Thiem has an unblemished record of 4-0 in the head-to-head scoreline against Marin Cilic.
Prediction: Marin Cilic to win in three sets.
