The 2022 Wimbledon champion, Novak Djokovic, takes on the world No. 16 Marin Cilic in the Tel Aviv Open final on Sunday.
On expected lines, Novak Djokovic has reached the finals of the Tel Aviv Open, and seems he has one hand on the title but you never know in sports.
The Serbian legend began his campaign in the Tel Aviv Open with a comfortable 6-0, 6-3 win against Spain’s Pablo Andujar in the round of 16. The 35-year-old followed it up with another resounding victory in the quarter-finals against Vasek Pospisil. In the semi-finals, the 21-time Grand Slam champion got the better of Roman Safiullin in straight sets 6-1, 7-6 (7-3). The former No. 1 will be the favorite to bag the title.
The experienced Croatian has managed to reach the finals of a tournament for the first time this year. He lost four semi-finals before coming into the Tel Aviv Open.
The 2014 US Open champion began his campaign with a come-from-behind win against 2020 US Open champion Dominic Thiem in the round of 16. Cilic’s quarter-final opponent Liam Broady pulled out of the tournament prior to the match and the 34-year-old progressed to the semi-finals. The 34-year-old met Constant Lestienne in the semi-finals and won the match quite convincingly in straight sets 7-5, 6-3 to set up a clash with the mighty Novak Djokovic in the finals. Cilic has a lot of experience and knows Djokovic quite well. He will have to give one of his better performances to get one over Djokovic.
Marin Cilic is way behind on the head-to-head scoreline as the Serbian leads 18-2.
Prediction: Novak Djokovic to win in three sets.
