Italian tennis pro – Camila Giorgi has been accused of allegedly obtaining fake documents to prove her vaccination status against COVID-19.
Camila Giorgi has come under suspicion after reportedly receiving a fake vaccination certificate, without actually getting the vaccination. The vaccination certificate came from a doctor who is ‘anti-vax’ or against the idea of vaccinations and wilfully furnished fake certificates.
Italian publication La Repubblica broke the news which later broke the internet. The alleged crime committed by Giorgi comes under ‘false ideology’. Another notable client of the doctor is the popular singer Madame. Giorgi has used her vaccination certificates to enter certain countries to play in tournaments.
The world No. 67 in the WTA rankings will be anxiously awaiting further results of the investigation that is being undertaken by the Italian police in Vicenza. If Giorgi is found to be in the wrong, her hopes of competing at the upcoming Australian Open can go up in smoke. To make matters worse for Giorgi, the immigration authorities of Australia and the United States might take action against her if the findings of the investigation don’t end up in her favor. She played both the Australian Open and the US Open after providing her allegedly fake vaccination reports.
The 30-year-old has never managed to progress beyond the third round at the Australian Open. If she is allowed to compete at the 2023 edition of the tournament, she would be hoping to better her record.
Giorgi reached the third round of the Australian Open in four editions of the tournament. In 2015, she made it to the third round for the first time.
The current Italian No. 2 reached the third round in the 2019 and 2020 editions of the tournament. Her final appearance in the third round came in this year’s tournament. She lost to eventual champion Ashleigh Barty in straight sets.
