World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev will start his campaign in the Mallorca Open as he faces fellow Russian Aslan Karatsev in a Round of 16 match at the 2022 Mallorca Open.
In this article, we will take a look at how the two players have been performing coming into this match. We will also see how things stand as far as head-to-head is concerned between Medvedev and Karatsev and in the end, predict the winner.
Daniil Medvedev’s form coming into the match
The defending champion Medvedev got a first-round bye but before this tournament, he lost in the finals of the Halle Open in straight sets to Hubert Hurkacz 1-6, 4-6.
In the all-important French Open, Medvedev faced a huge upset as he lost in the fourth round to Croatian Marin Cilic. What shocked fans, even more, was that Medvedev looked out of sorts and eventually lost in straight sets 2-6, 3-6, 2-6.
Medvedev had also suffered a setback in between the Halle Open and French Open as he lost the final of the Libema Open in straight sets against wild card Tim Van Rijthoven 4-6, 1-6.
Aslan Karatsev’s form coming into the match
Aslan Karatsev bounced back after losing the first set against Spaniard Jaume Munar in the Round of 32 matches of the Mallorca Open. Karasev eventually won the match 3-6, 6-1, 6-3.
The 28-year-old Karatsev did not have a good Halle Open campaign as he lost in the first round to Karen Khachanov 7-6 (7-4), 1-6, 2-6.
Talking about the French Open, Karatsev lost to the Argentine Camilo Ugo Carabelli in the first round in a five-set encounter.

Head-to-Head and Predictions
Interestingly, Aslan Karatsev has a 1-0 lead over Daniil Medvedev. Karatsev won their previous encounter at the 2021 Italian Open in straight sets.
There is no doubt that Daniil Medvedev will go into the match as the overwhelming favorite. But judging by how unpredictable his performances have been of late, Karatsev will feel he has a good chance.
However, we are backing the defending champion Medvedev to get the win in this match.
