Cilic is currently playing in the Canadian Open where he has reached the round of 16 with wins against Borna Coric and Karen Khachanov.

Marin Cilic was born to Bosnian Croat parents in Medjugorje, SR Bosnia and Herzegovina, a town in the Herzegovina region of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Marin’s father Zdenko Cilic encouraged him and his elder brothers Vinko and Goran to excel in sports and he wanted to give them the opportunities that he lacked while playing sports when he was young.
The first tennis courts in the town were built in 1991 and Cilic was among the few who played on them for the first time. Goran Ivanisevic recommended in 2004 that Cilic moved to San Remo, Italy to work with Ivanisevic’s former coach Bob Brett. Cilic was only 15 years old back then. He took the suggestion and went to Italy.
Marin has a younger brother named Mile, who is also a tennis player. Marin tied the knot with long-time girlfriend Kristina Milkovic on 28 April 2018. They have a son named Baldo.
Cilic began playing on the junior ITF circuit in 2004. He won the La Vie Junior Cup Villach in singles and the Dutch Junior Open in doubles. He won the French Open title in Boys’ singles in 2005. He won six singles tournaments and four doubles tournaments with Greg Kates on the junior circuit.
In 2006, he won the Croatia F1 and F2 events. By the end of the year, he was ranked 170. His first tournament win in his professional career came at the Casablanca Challenger in April 2007, and the second one in May 2007 at the Rijeka Challenger.
The first ATP Tour title came for Cilic in 2008 when he won the Pilot Pen Tennis tournament in New Haven, Connecticut. He also became seeded at a Grand Slam for the first time at the 2008 US Open. Six years later, Cilic managed to win his first and only Grand Slam title at Flushing Meadows.
At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, he reached the final of the men’s doubles competition alongside Ivan Dodig. They lost to fellow countrymen Mate Pavic and Nikola Mektic. It was the third time in Olympics men’s doubles’ history that the same country won both the gold and silver medals and the first one since 1908.
He has won 572 matches and lost 319 with a win percentage of 64.2% in singles competitions. Cilic has won 20 titles in his career. He reached a career-high ranking of No. 3 on January 29, 2018.
In the doubles circuit, Cilic has won 88 matches and lost 99 with a win percentage of 47.1. He has not won any doubles title as yet and achieved a career-high ranking of No. 49 on April 15, 2003.
