Tim van Rijthoven has undergone a successful elbow surgery – here’s everything you need to know
Tim van Rithjoveen recently announced on Instagram that he underwent surgery on his right elbow and reminisced about the 2022 grass court season. van Rijthoven gave one of the surprises during last year’s grass season.
With only one previous ATP tour victory, the Dutchman became the champion at the Libema Open, a tournament in which he was the local favorite. After a successful procedure, the 26-year-old tennis player shared the news with his fans and reminisced about his Wimbledon experience.
At the 2022 Libema Open, van Rijthoven entered the main draw with a wild card from the organization and defeated Matthew Ebden, Taylor Fritz (third seed), Hugo Gaston, Felix Auger-Aliassime (second seed), and Daniil Medvedev (first seed) on his way to the title. Two weeks later, he qualified for the main draw at Wimbledon, where he surprised everyone by reaching the fourth round, only to be eliminated in four sets by Novak Djokovic, who had been on a 17-match winning streak.
In his Wimbledon journey, he defeated Federico Delbonis, Reilly Opelka (15th seed), and Nikoloz Basilashvili (22nd seed). His highest ranking was world No. 101, and Van Rijthoven then focused on the Challenger circuit but faced difficulties in obtaining good results and struggled with injuries, leading him to decide to undergo surgery. Tim van Rijthoven’s last performance was at the ATP 250 Rotterdam Open in February 2023, where he lost in the first round to Maxime Cressy in three sets.
Van Rijthoven reached his career-best ATP singles ranking of 101st in the world, accomplishing this milestone on July 18, 2022. Additionally, he achieved his highest doubles ranking, placing at 225th globally in May 2022. During his junior career in 2015, he achieved a notable position of 13th worldwide.
In 2014, he made it to the quarterfinals in the boys’ singles tournament and the semifinals in the boys’ doubles at the Wimbledon Championships. In June 2022, he secured his first five ATP Tour victories, including an impressive win over world No. 2, Daniil Medvedev, which eventually led to him claiming his first-ever Rosmalen Grass Court Championships title.
Van Rijthoven has proudly represented the Netherlands in the Davis Cup, where he holds a balanced win-loss record of 1-1. Throughout his career on the ITF World Tennis Tour, he has showcased remarkable success, claiming victory in 13 Futures tournaments. Among these triumphs are eight singles titles and five doubles titles. Unfortunately, due to circumstances preventing him from defending his title at the 2023 Libéma Open, his ATP singles ranking dropped outside the top 350, settling at No. 390 as of June 12, 2023.
