Top ranked tennis stars Daniil Medvedev, Rafael Nadal, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Alexander Zverev will battle it out at the 2022 Aiberto Mexicano Telcel. The ATP 500 events will run from 21-26 February at the Arena GNP Seguros in Acapulco.

The top-seeded players will treat this as a crucial warm-up event leading to the 2nd Grand Slam of the year, the French Open. The event will see Medvedev battling it out for the No.1 rank in the world.

Daniil Medvedev is the No.1 seed in the tournament while defending champion and World No.3 Alexander Zverev is the 2nd seed. Tsitsipas, Nadal, Berrettini, Norrie, Fritz and Pablo Busta are the other seeds in the tournament. All the seeded stars will be directly playing in the Round of 32 as their 1st round fixture. Medvedev will be crowned the new no.1 if he wins the event irrespective of Djokovic’s results in Dubai.

How does the Acapulco draw look like?

The ATP 500 event boasts of a line-up that we often see in the knockout stages of any Grand Slam event. While 4 of the top 5 stars are in the draw the only one missing is current World No.1 Novak Djokovic.

Djokovic is playing the Dubai Tennis Championships which is offering more prize money than Mexican Open’s US$ 1,832,890. It’s fair to say most of the top stars believe the hard outdoor court of Arena GNP Seguros will be more useful to them as a part of the preparations leading to the Roland Garros next month.

The tournament is already underway and we have got an upset as well. Unseeded Stefan Kozlov defeated former World Number 3, Grigor Dimitrov, in their RO32 match. 8th seed Pablo Busta registered a comfortable win and so did 7th seed Taylor Fritz. John Isner got the better of veteran Fernando Verdasco in a three-set thriller.
