The Australian defeated Hungary’s Zsombor Piros 7-5, 6-2 in the Davis Cup qualifier
Alex de Minaur is the top-ranked Australian singles player in the tie. He was the hot favourite going into the match against Piros and didn’t have too much trouble to pull off a straight-set win against the Hungarian. The 23-year old Australian is currently ranked World No. 32 in the ATP Rankings.
An upbeat de Minaur was very satisfied with the victory which gave his country a crucial 1-0 lead. Speaking after the match, de Minaur said, “It’s special. To wear the green and gold in front of legends of the sport with the history, tradition and culture that the Australian team has, it’s just a special feeling for sure.”
Ken Rosewall was in attendance at the Ken Rosewall arena
The Davis Cup tie between Australia and Hungary is being played at the Ken Rosewall arena, named after the legend of Australian tennis. Rosewall had won the Davis Cup four times with Team Australia. The 87-year old has 8 grand slam singles titles to his name and 9 grand slam titles in men’s doubles. Rosewall was in attendance for the de Minaur-Piros rubber and it is definitely a major boost for the Australian players to play in front of the legend himself.
Alex de Minaur was thrilled to pull off the win in front of Rosewall. The Australian said after his match, “As much as I love playing on this court, this is your court Kenny and it’s my favourite court in the world”. Addressing Rosewall who was sitting on the front row, de Minaur said, “Thank you so much for being here, everything you’ve done. To keep getting us fired up for Davis Cup in many years to come.”
Thanasi Kokkinakis will now take on the highest-ranked Hungarian, World No. 35 Marton Fucsovics. Australia would progress to Davis Cup finals for third straight time if they win against Hungary.
