Alize Cornet sports a yellow visor and blue wristband in support of Ukraine
Alize Cornet has expressed her solidarity with Ukraine which is currently in midst of a war with Russia. Cornet stated that she will sport the colors of Ukraine at the WTA 250 tournament in Lyon.
French tennis player Alize Cornet sports a yellow visor and blue wristband in support of Ukraine. She joins a growing list of tennis players who have spoken up against the invasion including Russian athletes Andrey Rublev and current world No.1 Daniil Medvedev.
Moscow-born Australian tennis star Daria Saville took to Twitter to appeal to other players to wear the Ukrainian colors of yellow and blue to show their support for the war-torn country. “Silence in the current situation is equal to complicity. Putin, stop the war. Army, come home!” she posted. Cornet replied affirmatively saying “I’m in. Starting tomorrow in Lyon.” [Via Twitter]
Cornet and Saville both have shared posts on their respective social media accounts condemning the attacks by Russia. Saville who initially represented Russia during her junior career signaled her intention to protest against her home country by donning the Ukrainian colors at the Indian Wells tournament in California. Elina Svitolina and Marta Kostyuk have both replied to the post and expressed their gratitude to Saville for the kind gesture.
Alize Cornet’s topsy-turvy season
Cornet had a topsy-turvy season so far. She started her 2022 season with consecutive opening round defeats at the Melbourne Summer Set 1 and WTA Adelaide International 2. At the Australian Open, the French Veteran put on a remarkable run to reach her first Grand Slam final in her 63rd attempt.
The road to the quarters wasn’t easy either, Cornet defeated two former Grand Slam champions, Garbine Muguruza and Simona Halep, en route. Her dream run was cut short in the quarter-finals by eventual runner-up Danielle Collins.
Since the Australian Open, Cornet has registered only one win after being knocked out in the first round of the St. Petersburg Open and then in the second round of the Qatar Open. The 32-year-old will be keen on finding some momentum and turning her season around as she enters as the home favorite at the Lyon Open. The tournament will be headlined by top seed Camila Giorgi, Sorana Cirstea and Cornet will feature as the 4th seed.
