Young tennis star Amanda Anisimova beat the likes of Naomi Osaka, Paula Badosa Gibert and Maria Sakkari to win the Eisenhower Cup on Tuesday.
Amanda Anisimova had a great Women’s Day. Prior to starting her Indian Wells campaign, the 20-year-old won the blitz Eisenhower Cup in which only a tie-break to ten points had been played. The Tie Break Tens is a quickfire competition where participants partake in 10-point tie-breaks across a session of three-and-a-half hours.
Anisimova will now be looking to carry forward her good form into the India Wells tournament. She beat Sakkari 10:7 in the final tie-break to clinch the trophy. Anisimova will face Emma Navarro in her first matchup at the Indian Wells tournament on Thursday, March 10th.
After winning the exhibition tournament, the American also won hearts as she decided to give away a portion of her winnings to the victims in Ukraine. The other top-tier women tennis stars that took part in the Eisenhower Cup included Naomi Osaka, Paula Badosa Gibert and Maria Sakkari.
Amando Anisimova wins Eisenhower Cup and shows generous side
Anisimova was not even in line to participate in the Eisenhower Cup. However, she was brought in as a late replacement because Barbora Krejcikova got injured and she had to pull out.
After receiving her winner’s cheque of $150,000, Anisimova revealed that she would donate part of her winnings to Ukrainians in need. Ukraine has been under attack since the invasion by Russia, with many innocent civilians trapped in the country. Anisimova’s gesture was widely appreciated by tennis fans on social media.
This season, Anisimova owns a 9-3 record and she will be looking to improve on it as she moves forward. The American provided a shock at the Australian Open when she knocked out Naomi Osaka in the Third Round of the Grand Slam. However, she then suffered defeat to eventual champion Ashleigh Barty in the fourth round.
