Juan Martin del Potro doesn’t want Roger Feder to retire just like us fans across the globe
Juan Martin del Potro expressed the feelings of thousands of Tennis fans across the globe. “Amigos, don’t let him go” del Potro commented on a post by Laver Cup’s official Instagram handle. In the picture, players of Team World and Team Europe can be seen enjoying a group photo session in front of the iconic London Bridge.
Roger Federer is set to play the last match of his professional career later tonight. The Swiss Maestro will partner with long-time friend and rival, Rafael Nadal for a doubles match against Team World’s Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe. Federer had earlier confirmed that he will only play Doubles and not take part in singles because of his recurring knee injury.
Besides Federer and Nadal’s doubles encounter against Sock and Tiafoe there are three other interesting matches scheduled for Day 1. The opening match of the Laver Cup will see Europe’s Casper Ruud taking on World’s Jack Sock. It will be followed by two more singles clashes – Tsitsipas against Schwartzman and Andy Murray against Alex de Minaur.
Earlier this year, del Potro retired from tennis after his career was marred with recurrent injuries over the years. In an illustrious career spanning over 17 years, the Argentine star won 22 titles in Singles including a US Open Grand Slam title in 2009. del Potro was ranked as high as World No. 3 in singles during his playing career.
After Federer formally announced his retirement last week, del Potro paid a touching tribute. “I LOVE YOU, Roger. Thank you for everything you’ve done in tennis and with myself. Tennis world will never be the same without you,” del Potro wrote on Twitter. Incidentally, del Potro defeated Federer to lift his first and lone Grand Slam title at the 2009 US Open.
