ATP made the new announcement of the provisional tennis schedule for 2020 via its Twitter page
The ATP released a provisional tennis schedule for 2020 as men’s tennis is set to resume.
The new-look 2020 tennis calendar sets a pathway for the resumption of the Tour. The tour was suspended in March due to the Covid-19 crisis. The ATP made its announcement via Twitter following months of speculation and uncertainty.
The tennis schedule for 2020 intends to resume from August 14 with the Citi Open, in Washington D.C. This is followed by the Western and Southern Open, which is being shifted from its normal venue in Cincinnati this year by the U.S. Tennis Association to Flushing Meadows, in New York.
It will be held as a tune-up event at the same site as the US Open. The Grand Slam is scheduled to begin on August 31.
The Tour will then progress to the European red court events in September. Tournaments will be held in Madrid and Rome ahead of the French Open scheduled to start from September 27.
ATP mentioned that the aforementioned schedule for tennis in 2020 is subject to change. Continued assessments will be made relating to health and safety, international travel policies, and governmental approval of sporting events.
All events will be held under strict guidelines related to health and safety, social distancing, with reduced or no fans on-site.
“Our objective has been to reschedule as many tournaments as possible and salvage as much of the season as we can,” said ATP chairman Andrea Gaudenzi.
The schedule beyond Roland Garros is expected to be updated by mid-July. This includes a possible Asia swing ahead of the European indoor tournaments along with the season-ending ATP Finals in London
