Hubert Hurkacz bows out of Monte Carlo Masters 2022 after losing 4-6, 6-3, 6-7 against Grigor Dimitrov
Grigor Dimitrov causes another major upset on a day that earlier saw 10th seed Taylor Fritz lose to unseeded Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. Grigor Dimitrov put up a stellar show to win an intense three-set thriller against the 11th seed Hubert Hurkacz. The Bulgarian tennis star was on the mark right from the start and won the first set convincingly. Hurkacz however, showed his class and came back strong to win the second set. The third set was nerve-wracking with both players doing very well to hold on to their serves. Dimitrov eventually won the final and deciding set in the tie-breaker.
Grigor Dimitrov caused a major upset in his previous round too. The Bulgarian defeated 4th seed and Miami Open finalist Casper Ruud in straight sets 6-3, 7-5. However, Hurkacz was the favourite going into the match as the superior seed. Dimitrov and Hurkacz faced each other only once before in the ATP senior circuit. Dimitrov came out on top on that occasion at the Indian Wells Masters in 2021 and history repeated itself today in Monte Carlo.
Fans react to the result on Twitter
Fans are certainly impressed with Dimitrov’s run in the tournament so far. The way the tournament is shaping up with two big stars getting eliminated on the same day is definitely exciting for the fans.
The match was a treat to watch and went right down to the wire. “Was a great match, Hubi was pretty nervous towards the end of the match, which cost him a lot, especially on the backhand. Glad to see Dimitrov playing well at M1000 once again and finding his form!”, wrote a fan.
“Hubert played tragically today from deep inside the court, a lot of mistakes. Grigor’s well-deserved victory”, tweeted a fan who felt Hurkacz wasn’t at his best today.
Fans are backing Dimitrov to reach the Monte Carlo Masters final. “Grigor should reach the MC final.Fokina is not that good.Beating a rusty Djokovic is not something impressive”, tweeted a user who is really positive about Dimitrov’s chances in the tournament.
“Hurkacz blew this, so many unforced errors”, tweeted a fan who is clearly disappointed with Hurkacz’s loss.
