The Battle of the Brits tournament concluded last Sunday with Dan Evans emerging the singles champion
Dan Evans once again proved why he is number one British male tennis player after defeating Kyle Edmund in the finals to win the Battle of the Brits.
The recently concluded exhibition event saw the 30-year-old Evans registering a 6-3, 6-2 win over former British No.1 Edmund National Tennis Centre in West London last Sunday.
This was also Evans’ first-ever victory over countrymate Edmund. Meanwhile, Cameron Norrie won the third-place play-off with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over James Ward, who came in as a late replacement for Andy Murray.
The Scot, who had lost to Evans in the semi-final earlier, pulled out due to a shin problem. Evans looked in sensational form as he won all the three matches in his singles group before making it into the last-four.
Evans also displayed the same momentum while taking part in the doubles section by reaching the finals of the event.
Meanwhile, doubles favourites Jamie Murray and Neal Skupski shrugged off their slow start in the tournament to emerge champions in the double’s category. They defeated the doubles pairing of Evans and Glasspool 6-0, 2-6, 6-10 to walk away with the honours.
“It has been a long week and a great week,” said Evans, who made only three unforced errors compared to Edmund’s 20. “All the players have loved it – that’s the truth. Everyone has been raving about the tournament,” he continued praising the tournament.
Edmund added, “It was pretty much like a Tour event this week. I didn’t think it would be this big but it turned out really well.”
Jamie Murray, the Battle of Brits organiser, on the other hand, opined that if the opportunity came, they would once again conduct the tournament. He also added that it had evoked the player’s interest.
