The 40-year-old Brazilian tennis star, Bruno Soares, took to Twitter and credited the current world No. 1 and 2 in women’s tennis for being amazing ambassadors for the sport.
Bruno Soares participated in the ongoing Wimbledon tournament. He teamed up with fellow Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia in the mixed doubles competition. They were ousted in the Round of 16 by Gabriela Dabrowski and John Peers. The Brazilian duo won the first set but failed to win another thereafter.
In the men’s doubles competition, Soares teamed with Jamie Murray and won their first two matches convincingly to reach the Round of 16. However, the team of Filip Polasek and John Peers stopped their progress with a win in four sets.
The six-time Grand Slam champion took to Twitter and heaped praise on two of the greatest female tennis stars in the current generation, Iga Swiatek and Ons Jabeur. He wrote:
“Women’s tennis is in great hands with Iga and Ons. Forget about how good they are as tennis players. I’m talking about their personalities and carisma. Two great human beings and amazing ambassadors for the sport. Being a good human can take you a long way.”
Iga Swiatek came into the tournament as a strong favorite. After a resounding French Open triumph, the Polish star was expected to run through her opponents and at least reach the finals.
However, her dream of winning consecutive Grand Slams was crushed due to a disappointing loss to world No. 37 Alize Cornet in the third round.
Ons Jabeur has been terrific though. She has managed to reach the finals of Wimbledon with a dominant run thus far. The Tunisian has dropped just two sets till now in the competition. She will take on Elena Rybakina in the final and will enter the court as the favorite.
