The Italian tennis pro – Camila Giorgi has been under the spotlight after her doctor alleged that she had asked for fake COVID-19 certificates for herself.
Italian media have reported doctor Daniela Grillone is being investigated for allegedly delivering fake COVID-19 vaccinations to patients with their knowledge. Grillone named Camila Giorgi among her patients who sought fake COVID-19 vaccination certificates.
Fans were shocked when the news broke out in an Italian newspaper regarding Camila Giorgi being amongst a long list of people who allegedly used fake vaccination certificates. COVID-19 vaccination certificates were essential for players to be allowed to travel to different countries. Now the rules have been relaxed but Giorgi has landed in trouble for allegedly producing fake vaccination certificates to play in various tournaments.
The 31-year-old is currently playing in the Australian Open. She defeated Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in a one-sided affair in the first round on Tuesday. Speaking after the win, Giorgi confirmed that she had visited the doctor but denied doing anything wrong. She stated that she had done her vaccination “once” from Grillone and then from a different place.
“I did just once (sic) vaccination with her and the other ones I did with other doctors,” Giorgi told reporters at Melbourne Park.
“So I’m fine … she’s in trouble with the law in Italy.”
“I just did all my vaccination in different places, so the trouble is hers, not me. So with that, I’m very calm. Of course, if not, I couldn’t come here and play this tennis, I think.” she said.
Giorgi said she was vaccinated by the Italian doctor, and by medical officials in countries elsewhere. “Once. The other vaccination, I did it in different kinds of places, so it’s what I’m trying to explain,” she said.
Camila Giorgi will look to focus on her game, which will be tough, considering all the talk that is going around on the outside.
After her comprehensive win in straight sets against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the first round, Giorgi will square off against Anna Karolina Schmiedlova in the second round.
The player from Slovakia made it to the second round after stunning Italy’s Martina Trevisan in the first round. Karolina Schmiedlova and Giorgi have faced each other once before and the former won that match.
